When to Visit Hiriketiya: Surf Season, Weather, and What Each Month Feels Like

The travel sites all say the same thing about Hiriketiya: come November to March, avoid the rest of the year.

After hosting guests through every month of the year, we found that advice is mostly wrong. We ran the property through 12 months of conditions and the “off-season” labels miss what actually happens on the south coast in May and October.

Here is the local-knowledge version.

The shoulder season secret (May and October)

May and October are Hiriketiya’s best-kept windows.

You might catch a dramatic 20 minute tropical downpour in the afternoon, but it clears as fast as it arrives. The ocean stays incredibly warm. The tourist crowds vanish, and the jungle turns the most vibrant green of the whole year. Most days still give you 8 to 10 hours of sunshine.

We found this is the time of year repeat guests prefer most. It feels raw, romantic, and exclusive in a way the peak season can’t.

If you’re flexible on dates, these are the months we recommend.

There is always a wave (local knowledge over Google)

Beginners are often told to only come during peak winter, November to February, when the south coast has its biggest swells.

We found this advice is also misleading. The south coast geography means there’s always a wave if you know where to look.

During the shoulder months, the waves around the point actually become slightly more mellow. That’s the perfect window for beginners or intermediate surfers who want to build confidence without navigating a crowded, aggressive line-up.

Our surf team know which breaks to send you to depending on the time of year. The peak season is for the experienced. The rest of the year is where the learning happens.

Month by month, the short version

A normal stay at Jasper across the year is 5 to 7 days, and your experience varies more month to month than most guests expect.

November to February: Peak season. Biggest swells, biggest crowds, biggest prices. Best if you’re an experienced surfer or you want 30 days of mostly dry weather.

March to April: Winding down. Still mostly dry, still surfable, fewer people. Good shoulder window.

May: The first secret window. Afternoon rain is possible, but the ocean is warm and the property feels almost private.

June to August: Wettest months. Surfing is harder, but the jungle is alive and prices drop by 20 to 30 percent. Good for budget travellers or wellness-focused trips where you’re inside as much as outside.

September: Things start to clear. Quiet, often good waves around the point. Underrated.

October: The second secret window. Like May but with the energy of the season ahead.

The luxury of space

Travelling in peak season means sharing the water, the cafes, and the sunsets with hundreds of others. Travelling just outside that window shifts the entire energy of the trip.

Space in the line-up means you catch more waves. Space in the cafes means you actually talk to the locals. We found this is the part that turns a standard holiday into a properly spacious travel experience.

If you can travel in May, September, or October, do.
